Hi,
Recently I downloaded Microsoft Remote Desktop on my Mac so that I can remotely access my Windows laptop (which is on the same network). However, on entering the details for my Microsoft account, I received an error telling me that "The User Account Did Not Work" (as shown below). I have tried many solutions online but none seem to work.
- My Mac and Windows laptop are connected to the same network
- I am positive that I have entered my account details correctly (I was able to successfully log into the Microsoft store using them).
- The user account that I am using has admin permissions.
- I have my network settings set to private.
- I have tried using using both my PC name and its local IP address.
- For my user account I have used the email used to log myself into my Microsoft account and the PCNAME\USERNAME format.
- I have allowed Remote Desktop access on my target machine.
Am I missing anything? I would be very grateful for any help given.
;)
Just before putting my fix in here. can you please tell me if you have enabled Two-Factor Authentication on the Microsoft Account that you have used with your Windows?
In case you have, I believe your issue could be fixed like mine. Just head over to the Remote computer, log in with your Microsoft Account Password instead of the PIN. Then try from the other computer. Hope it will work.
Windows 10 setup now requires you to set up a PIN code when you agree with their advice to use a Microsoft Account. Therefore, when RDP tries to authenticate, it can't use the Microsoft Account password as the login is configured to use a PIN. (and using the PIN doesn't work, either, as it's not a real password on the account).
I went to the host PC (to which I want to RDP), locked the console via ctrl-alt-del, unlocked it with my Microsoft Account password instead of the PIN. Then, back on the RDP client PC, I was able to complete the connection using the Microsoft Account password.
